All You Need To Know About The Artistic Gymnastics World Championships

Posted on - 24th August 2023

If you tend to stay up-to-date with the latest gymnastics championships around the world, you might already know that the 2023 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships are just around the corner. To mark the event, we discuss some of the event's rich history and share all the details you need to know about this year’s World Championships.

History

The Artistic Gymnastics World Championships are run by the Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG), which is the worldwide governing body for all disciplines of gymnastics. Artistic gymnastics is a discipline of gymnastics which consists of male and female gymnasts performing short routines through floor exercises and different apparatus. Male gymnasts perform on the vault, uneven bars, balance beam, pommel horse, rings, parallel bars and horizontal bar. Whereas, female gymnasts only perform on the vault, uneven bars and the balance beam. The first World Championships was held during 1903 in Antwerp, Belgium for male gymnasts. It wasn’t until 1934 when women were allowed to compete.

2023 Artistic World Championships

From 30th September to 8th October 2023, the 52nd Artistic Gymnastics World Championships will return to Antwerp, Belgium (where the championships was first held). The event can be broken down into the team finals taking place on 3-4 October, the all-around finals will be 5-6 October and apparatus finals will happen on 7-8 October. Above all, the championships will also determine the final men’s and women’s teams who will qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The top 9 teams at the end of the qualifications will earn quota places for the Summer Games, they will be joined by the other 3 team’s who will compete for Olympic medals in the French capital.

Will Great Britain Be Competing?

Luckily, Great Britain have already secured their places for the 2024 Olympics during the 2022 World Championships in Liverpool, where the women’s team took the silver medal in the team event and qualified Great Britain for the 2023 World Championships. Alice Kinsella, Jessica Gadirova, Jennifer Gadirova, Georgia-Mae Fenton and Ondine Achampong were the incredibly talented gymnasts who were part of the Great Britain women’s team.

So the only question remaining is who will compete for Great Britain next month? While the men’s line-up was recently announced, the female line-up is yet to be confirmed, it is expected to be announced at the end of August, after the final selection. But if we were to make an assumption, we have our eyes on teenage twins, Jessica Gadirova and Jennifer Gadirova. Nevertheless we wish all the gymnasts, coaches and their teams the very best of luck in Antwerp!
