Artistic Gymnastics at the 2024 Olympics: What to Expect
Posted on - 6th March 2024
Did you know the 2024 Summer Olympic Games are less than 5 months away? As we get closer and closer to the global event, we wanted to inform our readers of everything they need to know and what to expect. So without further ado, here are our insights on Artistic Gymnastics at the 2024 Olympics.
Brief Overview
Whether you were unaware that the 2024 Olympics were just around the corner or you have it marked on your calendar already, we wanted to start this article with a brief overview of this year’s games. The 2024 Olympics will be held in Paris, France between the 26th of July and the 11th of August. There will be 41 Olympic sports (including artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics and trampoline gymnastics), plus 4 additional sports. However, the sport we are most excited about is artistic gymnastics which will be held in the Bercy Arena between the 27th of July and the 5th of August.
Artistic Gymnastics Schedule for the 2024 Olympics
Artistic gymnastics is divided into three events: individual men’s, individual women’s and the team competition. Male gymnasts will compete in the following order: floor exercise, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and the horizontal bar, whereas female gymnasts will compete on the vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise. The team event will include all apparatuses.
Here is the official schedule between the 27th July and the 5th August, each meet will consist of qualifications, team finals, all-around finals and apparatus finals:
- 27th July - Men’s qualification
- 28th July - Women’s qualification
- 29th July - Men’s team final
- 30th July - Women’s team final
- 31th July - Men’s all-around final
- 1st August - Women’s all-around final
- 3rd August to 5th August - Women’s/men’s apparatus finals
Who Will Represent Team Great Britain?
Unfortunately, there has been no statement released yet for the official lineup of artistic gymnasts to represent Great Britain. What we do know is that Great Britain is the only nation to secure quota spots for both men’s and women’s teams - courtesy of the top three finishes during the 2022 World Championships in Liverpool. Sources have said the 5 male and 5 female gymnasts will be selected by the National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and announced in late May or early June ahead of the games.
Artistic Gymnasts To Watch
In terms of who we are hoping to see on our screens for the 2024 Olympics is 2023 silver World champions, Ondine Achampong and Georgia-Mae Fenton as well as 2020 bronze Olympic medallists and twin sisters, Jennifer and Jessica Gadirova. However, Jennifer underwent ankle surgery in January and Jessica is still recovering from a full tear of her anterior cruciate knee ligament during her warm-up at the 2023 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships which was held in Antwerp last October. The final chance for individual gymnasts to qualify for the 2024 Olympics will come at the European Championships taking place from the 2nd to the 5th May in Rimini, Italy.
