What are the best ways to look after gymnastics leotards?

Posted on - 22nd April 2021

A lot is expected of gymnastics leotards - having to be eye-catching, able to stretch and fit the body like skin plus be affordable.

To meet all of these requirements Olympique has worked with special methods of manufacture and fabrics but they still need plenty of extra care.

Gymnastic leotards are similar to F1 racing cars, both are high performers but at the same time they are fragile and if abused they will fail.

For this blog, we have put together a guide to look after gym leotards which will keep them looking as good as new for countless sessions to come.

After your gymnastic session

Once you take off a leotard after your session has finished it will need turning inside out. This allows any moisture (or sweat for men) to evaporate rather than be trapped within the leotard. Make sure you never scrunch up a leotard within a bag, instead gently fold it and carry it in a mesh holdall bag which allows the air to circulate around the leotard and help to dry it.

Best way to wash leotards

A manufacturer's instructions for washing leotards will mostly list everything you do not want to do, such as -

  • Not using detergent
  • Not using bleach/detergents or fabric softeners
  • Do not tumble dry
  • Do not iron
  • Don't rub or scrub foil print or metallic garments
  • Don't hang over radiators

You should wash your leotard inside out in cold water by hand.

Drying your leotards

Ideally, dry flat and away from heat, making sure not to use clothes pegs as they weaken the fabric and will leave unsightly pressure marks.
