How to choose the best figure skating dress

Posted on - 20th September 2022

Skating, more than probably any other sport, is one which relies on spectacle. As a result, it’s important to find a dress that communicates your message and does so in a way that you’re comfortable with.

Whether you are a young lady looking for excellent girl's skating outfits for yourself or a parent searching for gymnastics attire for a small child, it can be difficult to find the perfect skating dress. It’s important to consider the purpose of your dress, plus the athlete's personality, budget, personal preferences and the selection available.

In this article from Olympique, we’ll be going over the considerations and questions that we find many of our customers have when purchasing a figure or ice skating dress.

How Many Options Do I Have?

You will probably have seen Olympic skaters gliding effortlessly on the ice, marvellously moving like swans in stunning competition dresses. Or maybe you've been to an event yourself, either as an athlete or a spectator. Regardless of where your relationship with skating began, you will most likely already have seen the wide selection of dresses on the market.

What is the purpose of the figure skating dress?

Is the dress meant for practice, testing or a special performance or competition?

Black outfits are great for practice as any stains won't show up too much. Alternatively, white dresses will probably not stand out too much during competitions or performances. Another question you may ask yourself is what colour is the background and how does this contrast with your outfit?

What are the different types of dresses?

Based on purpose, there are two types of figure skating dresses:

  • Training and practice dresses
  • The performance or competition dresses

Training Dresses Explained

Unlike a performance dress, a training dress is something you will use a number of times over many years. When choosing a training figure skating dress you should have durability in mind, as comfort is especially important during practice.

If you train in uncomfortable clothes, this could make you miserable and affect your training. Using durable high-quality material that lasts longer will also save you money on replacements. Heavy material leotards or dress lining help protect your body in case of falls.

Competition Dresses explained

The most important ice skating outfit is the competition dress, as during the event you will want to stand out. You want to make the experience memorable by choosing a dress that shows off your personality. Going for a bright colour and a great design will achieve this.

Does the dress fit?

Look for an outfit that fits no matter how good the dress is in terms of material, colour and uniqueness. If it does not fit, it could hamper your training and lead to you losing a competition.

What Budget Do I Have?

No matter how you like a dress, you will need to consider your budget. If you have a limited budget you will be able to find a sufficient ice skating dress in a sale.
