4 Key Measurements for Gymnastics Leotards

Before even starting your search, you will need to have the following measurements -

• Chest
• Waist
• Hip
• Girth

Most coaches, leotard manufacturers and veteran parents will tell you that girth is the most important measurement when choosing gymnastics leotards. Having said this, we will go over how to take all the necessary measurements to make sure you can choose the correct leo size from any sizing chart.

Chest Measurements - To get an accurate chest measurement, have your gymnast put their arms out to the side and take a deep breath and hold it. While they are still holding their breath, measure their chest (just under the armpits) all the way around.

Waist Measurements - Waist measurements are simple because you look for your gymnast's natural waistline. Take a measurement all the way around and ensure you measure the waist and not the hips.

Hip Measurements - To measure a gymnast's hips, you need to find the fullest part of their buttocks and then measure all the way around. It is crucial to ensure you find the fullest part of the buttocks to prevent your gymnast from having their cheeks hanging out.

Girth Measurements - Girth measurements are commonly referred to as torso measurements. As we have already mentioned, the girth measurement is the most important measurement to achieve the perfect leotard fit.

You need to find the centre of the gymnast's shoulder and hold the tape measure there. Now take the tape measure to the crotch and bring it through to the same shoulder. It is important to ensure the tape measure is snug in the crotch for the measurements to be completely accurate.
