Posted on - 26th July 2023

Have you ever watched a figure skating routine and thought-that was one of the best performances you have ever seen? We can completely relate to this. As you know, the team at Olympique is very passionate about all things skating, hence our name and subsequent passion. We're all aware the next Winter Olympics Games aren't happening until 2026 in Milan. In the meantime, we often discuss famous skaters and recall our favourite routines from time to time. In this article, we look back at our favourite single and pair skating routines over the years, which are known to be some of the best figure skating moments of all time!

Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean, 1984 Olympics

If you are a fan of the Olympic Games, like we are, you will be no stranger to the famous British figure skating duo, Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean. During the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, Torvill and Dean took to the ice and set a new standard for professional ice dancing. Their iconic Boléro performance included a number of intricate lifts and spins, showcasing precise synchronisation and grace on the ice that left the audience in awe. They received top scores of 6.0 across the board, winning them a gold Olympic medal for ice dancing. Today, you may recognise Torvill and Dean as judges on the ITV series, Dancing on Ice. If you haven’t seen their mesmerising routine yet, we highly recommend you to watch it, trust us, you won’t regret it!

Tara Lipinski, 1998 Olympics

Tara Lipinski, USA figure skater, stole the show with her Olympic performance at the 1998 Winter Olympics. At just 15 years old, she is the youngest person to win a gold Olympic medal in ladies’ single figure skating. Her exuberant routine consisted of flawless footwork, several triple jumps as well as a triple loop-triple loop combination, which is a move that is incredibly challenging for any skater no matter their level of experience. As you rewatch her routine, you can see her performance was full of energy and charisma, which makes it one of our favourites.

Alina Zagitova, 2018 Olympics

One of our most recent favourite routines is by the Russian figure skater, Alina Zagitora. Her 2018 Olympic routine was set to the soundtrack of the well-known film, Black Swan. She performed a series of set sequences, jumps, a triple lutz-triple loop combination and a triple flip with speed and ease. One element of her performance that stood out to us was the Bielmann spin, which she held for an impressive amount of time with complete control. With a score of 239.57, she won gold for the ladies’ single skating free skate event.
