How Does Fabric Affect Your Performance?
Just like any other sport, there are clothing items associated and designed for a certain sport. In gymnastics, the clothing in question is the famous leotard. Gymnastics requires a lot of movement and flexibility in order to perform splits and rolls. So, it only makes sense for the fabric to be flexible too! This is why gymnastic leotards are made from stretchable materials such as nylon and lycra.
Nylon is strong, wrinkle resistant, and flexible. Lycra or spandex, is known for being extremely stretchy, soft, breathable, lightweight, and its resistance from body oils, sweat, as well as sunlight. A combination of nylon and lycra make a superb team, in terms of stretch but also holds its original shape very well. Whereas, a leotard made from cotton may have better absorbent qualities but it doesn't have the same stretchability of nylon or lycra which means gymnasts cannot move freely.

A poorly fitted leotard can hide bad posture and restrict movement.
